However, that convenience comes at a cost, as prices per square foot are higher in the downtown than anywhere else—even in ultra-exclusive neighborhoods like Red Mountain.
West End Homes For Sale
The West End is the best place in Aspen to raise a family. This neighborhood is quite large; depending on how you count, there are around 40 city blocks in the West End, as well as some newer developments around the perimeter.
West End properties are almost entirely single-family homes. Some are historically significant, like the Wheeler-Stallard House, built in 1888 by Jerome Wheeler, the same wealthy industrialist who constructed the Hotel Jerome and Wheeler Opera House. The West End has always been the upscale part of town, so many old Victorians are large and ornate.
This neighborhood is also much quieter than downtown. It’s the perfect place to take a stroll or to let the kids roam around on their own. Most of Aspen is within walking distance, though trudging your way to the lifts in ski boots may pose a challenge.
East Aspen Homes For Sale
East Aspen is a quiet, family-friendly enclave, separated from the hustle and bustle of downtown by the Roaring Fork River. Properties range from small bungalows and single-family homes to large, contemporary estates. The steep slopes hasten their way to the bottom so you can burn another lap on the Silver Queen Gondola’s 3,267 vertical feet. Budding locals cut their teeth on the tight trees that occupy the mountain’s eastern aspect while furious piste skiers zip down Ruthie’s Run, a former World Cup racetrack.

Or, you can simply walk Aspen’s Victorian-lined streets and see the arc of history for yourself.
