Old Snowmass At A Glance
Down this unassuming lane called Snowmass Creek Road lies some of the Roaring Fork Valley’s most prized real estate. This unincorporated town is as old as anything in the Valley. It’s a blend of ranchland, estates, artist retreats, and, most importantly, the Benedictine Monastery that sits on the Roaring Fork Valley’s largest and most valuable property.
Discover Old Snowmass Real Estate
When it comes to real estate in Old Snowmass, the majority of the listings will be single-family homes. While these properties do range quite significantly in both style and size, they all offer a bit of a semi-rural retreat in the heart of the mountainside.
Single-family homes for sale in Old Snowmass are for those who love the outdoors. Scenic views and acreage are features of the homes and estates in this area, and with various creeks (Snowmass Creek, Capitol Creek) and the river flowing through this region, there are a number of waterfront properties available. This just adds to the seclusion and the privacy that are emblematic of homes in this community.
Architecturally, Old Snowmass real estate does often embrace that characteristic Colorado cabin style, however as a good portion of the homes fall under the luxury category, custom designs and builds are common. With this comes a lot of freedom in regards to design as well as interior and exterior upgrades. Features such as fireplaces, outdoor entertaining areas, and pools are pretty common features—especially in the luxury category. New construction homes aren’t as frequently built in comparison to some of the other regions in and around Aspen.
Old Snowmass: A Real Estate History
Old Snowmass is also the site of a famed historic property, the St. Benedict’s Monastery. This 3,739-acre ranch was purchased by Benedictine Monks, aka trappists, in the 1950s. Since then, they’ve managed the cattle ranch and tended to their monastic duties. However, in 2023, the monastery announced its closure, and the property was listed for sale at $150 million.
Even if you’re priced out by the St. Benedict’s Monastery, there are still plenty of other estates, ranches, mansions, equestrian centers, and farms in Old Snowmass. They all share the same rugged beauty of Capital Creek and the adjoining Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, which contains seven of Colorado’s 53 fourteeners.
Things To Do in Old Snowmass
Old Snowmass is full of activities that residents can enjoy year-round. The town retains its old ranching spirit, which has translated to the equestrian arts in the modern day. With an abundance of horse trails, riders can experience the beauty of the Colorado wilderness. As well, Capital Peak Outfitters and Snowmass Creek Outfitters both offer equestrian services and are based right in Old Snowmass.
As an alternative, visitors and residents can give fly fishing a shot on Capitol Creek, the Roaring Fork River, or any of the small streams and lakes that run down from the mountains. These waters are known particularly for their trout. For hikers and explorers, the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness is home to seven fourteen-thousand-foot peaks, including Capital Peak, Snowmass, and the Maroon Bells. The Wilderness has 100 miles of hiking trails, including the overnight trip to Conundrum Hot Springs. Other routes include Capitol Lake and the 26-mile Four Pass route.
Back at Highway 82 at the Old Snowmass intersection is the Rio Grande Trail, which begins in downtown Aspen and continues 42 miles to Glenwood Springs. The trail is relatively flat and accessible to both bicycles and foot traffic. While down there, check out the Old Snowmass Market, located at the Conoco Station. It’s a local favorite institution, with homemade ice cream, paninis, burritos, and tacos.
