Cemetery Lane

Cemetery Lane runs north to south between McLain Flats Drive and Highway 82. This West Aspen neighborhood, also known as Red Butte, is one of Aspen’s best locales for owners looking to settle in for full-time Aspen living. These aren’t Aspen’s most opulent, most private, or largest homes, but you won’t find a neighborhood with more charm, proximity to downtown, and affordability (by Aspen standards). Whereas the average single-family home in Aspen settled for over $10 million these days, Cemetery Lane homes are still selling in the mid-single millions (about $5-8 million).

Discover Cemetery Lane Real Estate

The neighborhood of Cemetery Lane/Red Butte is known primarily for its amenities, as well as its down-to–earth, local vibe. Real estate in Cemetery Lane consists of single-family homes (though, on occasion, a converted multi-family property [duplex or half duplex] may become available on the market). Though these properties might not be as large as the estate-sized properties of Red Mountain or Five Trees, these properties are still spacious enough for families who want to live in Aspen year-round.

Single-family homes for sale in Cemetery Lane are typically built in a more traditional cabin style, with stone and wood exteriors (as well as beams) being popular design features. Properties in this area aren’t necessarily old, and a significant portion were built in the 1980s, however many buyers choose to renovate or even completely rebuild older homes in this community. New construction homes are generally more contemporary in architectural style, and fit in with the current trends. Vacant land or older homes sometimes have an architect already involved with the project.

Cemetery Lane doesn’t have many short-term rentals or tourists. Its quiet atmosphere and great location are perfect for families—and homes have the square footage to accommodate. Smaller than some of the other communities, Cemetery Lane properties range between 2,000 square feet (for half duplexes) to 8,000 and 9,000 square feet (the larger properties along Red Butte Drive, about 20 in total). A small number of properties also back onto the Roaring Fork River and are some of the most desirable homes for sale in this neighborhood.

Avid golfers will also like that the Aspen municipal golf course (Aspen Golf Club) is right next door, and many homes back onto the green. This adds some additional views and privacy in an already tranquil, residential neighborhood. Cemetery Lane receives sun year-round.

Things To Do in Cemetery Lane

As a residential area, Cemetery Lane is primarily local traffic—but this community’s appeal lies in the fact that Aspen’s downtown is 2 miles away. It mixes a family-oriented atmosphere with plenty of things in the vicinity to do outdoors. The Red Butte Cemetery, which gives the neighborhood its moniker, is a peaceful retreat to walk the dogs or take a leisurely stroll, while the Rio Grande Trail, which follows the Roaring Fork River, provides easy foot and bike access to downtown Aspen. Directly from Cemetery Lane, a trail ascends Red Butte and follows the ridge, offering great views of Aspen and the surrounding Elk Mountains.

The RFTA, Aspen’s free shuttle bus, has several stops along Cemetery Lane and is the most convenient way to get around.

Hiking Around Aspen

Cemetery Lane is a secret paradise of local hiking trails—among the best in Aspen. The Red Butte Trail starts near the intersection of Cemetery Lane and Silver King Drive. The trail climbs steeply and follows the ridge along Red Butte, with extraordinary views of the Roaring Fork Valley, including Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk ski areas.

Just after the bridge over the Roaring Fork River, hikers can join up with the Rio Grande Trail, which follows the river for 42 miles, all the way to Glenwood Springs. This is the easiest of the hiking options, with no steep climbs and descents.

The Sunnyside Trail is the most challenging local trail. The trailhead starts just north of Cemetery Lane, after the road turns to McLain Flats. It’s an 11-mile out-and-back with 2,800 feet of elevation gain, so expect this hike to take most of a day. Nevertheless, the trail is astonishingly scenic and is one of the first to melt out in the springtime. Visitors can often hike the lower sections even in the middle of winter.

Golfing In Cemetery Lane

Cemetery Lane is directly adjacent to the Aspen municipal golf course. Golf is the skiing of the summertime for many of Aspen’s residents, with nearly a dozen different courses located throughout the Roaring Fork Valley.

The Aspen course is one of the finest muni courses in Colorado, complete with a pro shop and PGA staff offering private instruction and clinics. Designed by Frank Hummel, the course is a serious challenge, measuring just over 7,000 yards with several par-5 holes.

Those looking for a more elite experience should check out the Maroon Creek Club, one of Aspen's most expensive private clubs—however, those who cannot afford the $250,000 initiation fee and $40K in annual dues can still play! Due to a land lease agreement, full-time Aspen residents can use the course on a limited basis, though course fees apply.

Skiing In Aspen

Although it’s not ski-in ski-out, Cemetery Lane is a stone’s throw from Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk Mountain. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive to Snowmass Mountain. All resorts are accessible by bus, right from Cemetery Lane.

Aspen Mountain has a reputation for excellent expert skiing, with no green trails and lots of steep tree skiing. Aspen Highlands is also an expert paradise. It’s the only mountain in Aspen with true alpine terrain, located in the legendary Highlands Bowl. Buttermilk is a beginner and family ski paradise, while Snowmass is an all-around destination resort, with almost as much terrain as the other three resorts combined.

Aspen Downtown

Downtown Aspen is the world-famous hub of culture, sophistication, luxury, and mountain sports. “Mountain chic,” the word used to describe many mountain towns these days, originated from the Aspen scene.

Beneath the towering slopes of Aspen Mountain, the town’s streets are lined with historic red-brick buildings housing designer boutiques, cozy cafés, and world-class restaurants serving everything from après-ski comfort food (Ajax Tavern) to Michelin-star-worthy cuisine (Bosq). Catch a live performance at the historic Wheeler Opera House or the lively Belly Up. Pick up some fur-lined boots at Kebo Sabe or enjoy the free-entry Aspen Art Museum. Meanwhile, summer transforms the town into a hub for festival-goers, with events like the Aspen Jazz fest, the Wine Fest, and the Aspen Music Fest (classical music).

Schools & Education In Cemetery Lane

The Aspen Public School system serves Cemetery Lane. It includes Aspen Elementary School, grades PK-4; Aspen Middle School, grades 5-8; and Aspen High School, grades 9-12. Niche Rankings ranks the Aspen public school system 15th out of 181 districts in Colorado. Cemetery Lane has the added advantage of being close to the Aspen School Campus, which houses all three public schools.

Two private schools are Aspen Country Day School and Aspen Community School, both grades K-8. Additionally, the Wildwood School in East Aspen offers programs for Pre-K children between the ages of two and a half and five.
