Golf Communities

The Roaring Fork Valley is as much a haven for golf as it is for skiing, culture, and luxury living. In fact, the Valley’s large area means there are several private and municipal courses in the region. Nearly every community is within proximity to an outstanding golf course, and it is easy to travel between points of interest in Snowmass, Basalt, Carbondale, and even Glenwood Springs. As a result of increased interest over the years, there are a few exclusive golf course communities that have been developed.

Aspen’s Golf Communities At A Glance

The Roaring Fork Valley's golf history is as old as Aspen’s lift-access skiing. Glenwood Springs opened a course in the early 1950s, and by the 1960s, golfing was an increasingly popular way to enjoy the spectacular Colorado summer.

Perhaps the only disadvantage to golfing in Aspen is the relatively short season. At the Aspen Golf Club, the Maroon Creek Club, and the Snowmass Club, the ideal season is the months of July, August, and September. However, down-valley locales like Carbondale and Glenwood Springs are at lower elevations and therefore offer a more extended season. In Glenwood, there’s great golfing to be had starting as early as April and ending in November. Many courses in the region are also wildlife corridors, meaning it’s not uncommon to see elk grazing near a fairway or bald eagles soaring overhead.

Explore Golf Real Estate In Aspen

Real estate on the golf courses of Aspen means a luxury lifestyle. When it comes to property types, the most prevalent properties on the market are condos, followed by townhomes. Of course, each course and club has its own neighborhoods and available properties, with their own amenities.

The Country Club Villas at Snowmass Village, for example, is one of the most popular golf communities. It offers easy access to the golf course and to the slopes at Snowmass, as well as discounted memberships and dues. These spacious condos for sale are quite luxurious, and other than the exceptional amenities of the club, they also feature gorgeous views of the scenery.

The townhomes for sale at Tiehack, as an alternative, have greater square footage than is typical of golf communities—though with this comes a much  higher price point. With amenities such as ski-in/ski-out living (with life access), mountain views, and specious floor plans, these luxury golf properties are perfect for both part-time and year-round living.

Golf Communities In The Roaring Fork Valley

Snowmass Village is home to the Snowmass Club, a Jim Engh-designed course originally developed in 1980. It’s the course with the highest elevation in the Roaring Fork Valley, clocking in at about 8,300 feet.. Like other courses in the region, the greens are wildly undulating but meticulously maintained. Due to the elevation, Snowmass has the shortest season of any of the Valley’s courses; expect the first snowfall here in September.

Heading down Valley is the community of Basalt. Though located farther from the ski resorts, this town is home to the private Roaring Fork Club. The 7,100-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed course features native grasses and rolling fairways, and much of it runs parallel with the Roaring Fork River.

Carbondale is another option. The public River Valley Ranch Club is the Valley’s most popular golf course and one of the newest, having opened in 1997 headed by designer Jay Moorish. It’s also been called one of the best courses in the state by various outlets, including Golf Advisor. The course is known for its wide fairways, generous landing areas, and strategic bunkering that forces players to think through their approach shots. At 7,348 yards, the course is long but offers multiple tee boxes for golfers of all levels.

At the end of the Roaring Fork Valley, Glenwood Springs has been home to great golfing since 1953, when the Glenwood Springs Golf Club opened nine holes on the north side of Interstate 70. Even better is the Ironbridge Golf Club, which offers scenic views of the majestic Mount Sopris across 18 holes. It’s the epitome of an alpine golf course, making use of the canyon landscapes and undulations. But watch out—this 7,105-yard, par-72 course is the real deal, especially the back nine. The infamous 17th hole is a par-3 that plays over a deep gorge with little room for error.

Golfing In And Around Aspen: By The Numbers

Golfing at the Valley’s higher altitude is an experience in and of itself. Thinner air (roughly 20%) translates to less resistance on the ball, meaning drives will go farther. In Aspen—perched at nearly 8,000 ft—one’s drive can be expected to be almost 10% longer than at sea level. Another game-changer is the trajectory of one’s drive. It’s much harder to hook or slice the ball, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Expect shots to be about 20% straighter in Aspen.

A more obvious effect of the thinner air is the difficulty of physical exertion. Players can expect to feel the effects of altitude for one or two weeks after arriving, after which the body will adapt. The latitude and the hilly nature of the region’s courses make golfing more strenuous here than in many other locales. Of course, the region’s stiff afternoon breezes and sudden weather shifts add another layer of complexity to the sport.

There is a diversity of courses from nine to 18 holes and at varying difficulties. That means golfers could spend the day on a single round or smack out the front nine in just over an hour at some courses.

With two local courses, any Aspen property is ideally situated for a golfer. The Aspen Golf Club is one of the country’s finest municipal courses, just two miles west of downtown. Although it’s a muni course, visitors can expect the greens to be maintained on par with privates in most other parts of the country. The club has all the usual amenities, like a pro shop and PGA staff for private instruction and clinics, including a gold academy.

Architect Frank Hummel designed the current parkland-style course in 1978. It measures just over 7,000 yards and once featured notoriously undulating greens. The course has been redesigned in a modern vein, with slightly less head-scratching greens and all the usual amenities. The course provides a stiff test, particularly on its par-5 holes, where well-placed tee shots are crucial for a good score.

The Maroon Creek Club is Aspen’s private club, one of the most exclusive in the country. Its challenging Tom Fazio-designed course is ranked 7th-best in Colorado by Golf Digest. For members, the initiation fee and yearly dues are hundreds of thousands of dollars, although the course offers limited accessibility to locals as well.
