Aspen’s Rich Equestrian History
With a rich history that many attribute first to skiing, Aspen is an epicenter for those who enjoy keeping horses. In fact, the first miners arrived in Aspen on horseback, as this was the main method of transportation to get between A and B in those days. Though a lot of effort had to be put into caring for these animals and braving the elements during travel, they experienced the valley in, as some would say, the best way—with fresh air and mountain views.
Today, Aspen has evolved into a modern equestrian center, with plenty of land for horses to roam free and monetary resources to provide for their needs.
Discover Equestrian Estates For Sale In Aspen
Aspen has become an equestrian center for several reasons. First, many of the estates surrounding the town were carved out of massive tracts of land originally used for ranching. These estates are still quite large, with plenty of room to construct barns and other necessities for horseback riding.
Estates for sale on the Aspen market are positioned on large plots of land. This is necessary for the space that horses require, but buyers also like the privacy that this provides. Though building regulations have changed over the years (in regards to how big a property can be, stylistic considerations, and more), some of the older properties found on the market had not been subject to those restrictions, and therefore offer something a little bit extra for prospective buyers. Desirable, these homes and estates garner a lot of interest, but are typically priced at the top end of the real estate market.
Secondly, Aspen is surrounded by some of the most incredible riding terrain in the world. Most equestrians will already know that National Forest and Wilderness Areas, like the Maroon Bells Wilderness, allow horses on public trails. As an escape for those who love the outdoors, this means experiencing even more of the beautiful Aspen area.
Lastly, there is an extensive community of equestrians already in this region. This comes with many benefits, particularly in regards to amenities, as the town already has veterinarians, builders specializing in barns, and more. Aspen also has several outfitters that sell riding packages, giving an equestrian presence to the trails around town. An estate for sale in Aspen means being surrounded by like-minded and friendly neighbors.
Best Equestrian Communities
The best communities for horses are the ones that are a bit removed from Aspen. Drive away from Highway 82, and this is where estates with horses grazing behind beautiful picket fences come into view.
At the top of the list are Woody Creek and Old Snowmass, with acres beyond acres of ranchland abutting National Forest. Old Snowmass is home to a number of outfitters that operate in the Maroon Creek Wilderness. The towns of Basalt and Carbondale also have excellent potential, with large tracts of land available for purchase in the hills surrounding them.
