Glenwood Springs

The city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is known as the jewel of the Rockies. Up until a few years ago, Glenwood Springs was largely overshadowed by Aspen’s regional prominence—a city known for its luxury homes and skiing. However, in recent years the town has experienced a bit of a renaissance and is now a destination in and of itself.

Glenwood Springs At A Glance

Glenwood Springs is a stunning, Victorian-era city located at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers. Its location has a lot of advantages. Beyond its local charm, it’s also a hub for tourists passing by on I-70, as well as a bedroom community of Aspen, Beaver Creek, and Vail. The town has its own ski resort, its own college, some of Colorado’s best river sports, and a happening downtown with shopping and dining galore.

Aspen and Vail are both an hour away, while Beaver Creek is 45 minutes away. Glenwood Springs is ideal for commuters who want to relax or recreate at these world-class resorts.

Discover Glenwood Springs Real Estate

Generally considered to be an affluent city with an active real estate market, Glenwood Springs is host to a variety of homes, condos, townhouses, and, out in the hills, estates and ranches. There is also an abundance of Glenwood Springs lots for sale, ranging from a fraction of an acre in the downtown to hundreds of acres on the outskirts and surrounding county land.

The gridded streets of downtown Glenwood Springs are home to tree-lined sidewalks and gorgeous Victorian-era properties, ranging from small miner’s cabins to mansions with several bedrooms. These homes come up on the market with increasing rarity and are in high demand because they are a stone’s throw from everything Glenwood Springs has to offer. In general, homes close to the downtown are quite difficult to find for sale, but the historic properties—with their bright-colored exteriors and unique charm—are the most sought-after of all.

In regards to home design, there is a diverse selection of architectural styles, including traditional cottages and single-family homes in Glenwood Springs proper (both bungalows and multi-story homes). Outside of the central neighborhoods, properties increase in size, often situated on excellent acreage.

The newer developments of Glenwood Springs offer opportunities to live in townhouses and modern single-family homes within a few minutes of the downtown. Meanwhile, Glenwood Springs luxury real estate consists of mansions and estates perched in the mountains surrounding the town. There has been consistent development in the city over the past decade, which favors more contemporary styles a lot of the time.

Things to Do in Glenwood Springs

One of the best (and most well-known!) things about Glenwood Springs is its proximity to the hot springs. The area is recognized for its warm, volcanic water, which became the city’s namesake. These developed pools, like Iron Mountain and Yampah Spa & Salon, are located right in town. However, for adventurous folks, there are also the undeveloped pools that require a short hike to get to, like Penny Hot Springs and South Canyon Hot Springs.

Another popular outdoor activity is mountain biking. There are a few local trails in Glenwood Springs, such as the Grandstaff Trail. Additionally, for those who don’t mind a tip, 15 minutes down the road in Carbondale is Red Hill, which is home to a dozen or so trails. Slightly further afield, the Prince Creek and Crown Trail System features over three dozen trails on the foothills of Mount Sopris. Trails for all levels exist, although the area caters particularly well to intermediates.

Glenwood Springs is also a destination for river sports, thanks to its location right between the Colorado River and Roaring Fork River. Everything from whitewater rafting and kayaking to stand-up paddleboarding and fishing is possible. The Glenwood Whitewater Park is Colorado’s first artificial whitewater feature. Scenic floats along the Colorado River, taking in views of Glenwood Canyon, are also a draw for those looking for a more mellow adventure.

The city offers a variety of dining options, something not typical of a mountain community of this size. For something casual, check out Slop & Hatch, located on 7th Avenue near the Colorado River. It’s a modern, counter-serve establishment with a fresh take on American fusion. Lovers of Mexican food must stop by El Tapatio. If you haven’t yet discovered pierogies, then Mama’s Pierogi food truck on Grand Avenue is your best bet for doing so.

Skiing In Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is about 30 minutes from the local ski hill, Sunlight Mountain. Sunlight is the sort of small, local ski hill that once dominated the sport of skiing before the rise of corporate ski areas.

The communities of Beaver Creek and Vail are 45 minutes and an hour away, respectively, along I-70. These are world-class ski resorts with plenty of options for those of all experience levels. Beaver Creek is known particularly for its luxurious amenities and uncrowded slopes, while Vail is famous for its size. The resort seems to go on forever—though it can get (infamously) crowded.

Of course, the four famed Aspen ski resorts are about an hour away. Snowmass is Aspen’s largest domain and is the best for intermediates and folks who only get the chance to ski a few weeks a year. Meanwhile, Aspen Mountain is home to fearsome mogul lines and dreamy powder stashes in secret tree lines. Expert skiers and riders should also explore Aspen Highlands. The Highlands Bowl is a powder heaven but don’t underestimate the effort required to hike the ridge to the summit.

Schools & Education in Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs's public schools are Glenwood Springs Elementary, Sopris Elementary, Riverview School, Glenwood Springs Middle School, and Glenwood Springs High School. There are two private schools in town: St. Stephen Catholic (K through 8) and the Yampah Mountain School.

Additionally, Colorado Mountain College is headquartered in Glenwood and offers associate and bachelor’s degrees.
