Smuggler Highlights
Smuggler, Aspen At A Glance
Smuggler is a peaceful retreat just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Aspen’s Central Core, known particularly for its awe-inspiring views of Aspen Mountain and the town below. The southern exposure gives Smuggler a little extra sun during the winter, which adds to why this neighborhood is such a desirable place to live.
In regards to walkability, Smuggler isn’t quite like downtown. Though it is possible, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk to the Central Core and Aspen Mountain Ski Resort. It’s not always very pedestrian friendly, as some of the smaller streets do not have sidewalks and the neighborhood is positioned on a hill. However, the views and residential feel of the neighborhood more than make up for the added trek.
Explore Smuggler Real Estate
As a neighborhood, Smuggler consists mainly of single-family homes and condos. It’s a tranquil area, with homes positioned on the winding streets, though there is sometimes traffic because of the mine and the hiking trails.
Single-family homes for sale in Smuggler include a mixture of traditional cottages and cabins alongside more contemporary designs. Additionally, square footage ranges, with most of the larger estate-sized properties being located further from the downtown. Regardless, detached properties make for excellent family homes, as they feature multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as parking spaces and outdoor space to entertain.
Condos take up a smaller percentage of the real estate market, though there are often a few units for sale. Typically, these properties are on the smaller side, and are more suitable as a vacation home than a full-time residence. Although most of the Smuggler area is within the Aspen Short-Term Rental (STR) zone, there are only a handful of permits throughout, which means less disturbance from vacationers.
Additionally, while much of Aspen is confined to the shadows during winter, Smuggler is far enough on the south faces to pick up quite a bit of sun. This may sound insignificant, but we’ll take every drop of sunshine we can get during Aspen’s long winters. Homes for sale in Smuggler feature large windows to let in the light—which also allows for some gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.
Skiing in Smuggler
Smuggler is one of the closest areas in Aspen to the Silver Queen Gondola and Aspen Mountain ski area. The “town hill,” also known as Ajax, has the reputation for being the local’s mountain, with an abundance of gnarly steeps, tight tree skiing, and furious mogul lines. It’s also north-facing and holds soft, velvety powder long after the last snowfall.
For beginners, Buttermilk and Snowmass have friendly open slopes and pride themselves on the perfection of their corduroy.

The Aspen shopping experience is world-class, to say the least. In addition to the requisite outdoor gear shops, you’ll find classic luxury designer brands like Gucci, Audemars Piguet, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and more. Meanwhile, the Smuggler Mountain Trailhead is the gateway to one of Aspen’s best hikes. If it’s a low-snow year, you can even do this hike in the winter.
For a pleasant spot to rest amongst your thoughts, the John Denver Sanctuary, positioned on the river, honors the late great country singer who called Aspen home. This garden has a sports field, a theatre, and walking/biking trails.
