Starwood Highlights
Discover Starwood Real Estate
Starwood is a private, gated community situated off of Trentaz Drive, and is desirable for its amenities and beautiful properties—108 in total. Because of the exclusivity of this neighborhood, real estate is limited, typically with only a few listings available at one time. Additionally, Starwood HOA dues are lower than those of many other properties in the Valley.
Homes for sale in Starwood are sought-after for a number of reasons. Each home is custom built and uniquely designed, usually with renowned architects attached to the project. Buyers looking for vacant lots find Starwood appealing, as the community does allow for a lot of freedom in regards to construction. Contemporary style estates are a prevalent architectural style, however more traditional cottages and ranches are also popular. Real estate starts at about 2,000 square feet (with additional acreage attached—between 2 and 7 acres on average) to upwards of 10,000 square feet. Starwood has some of the best views in Aspen. Residents can see all four ski resorts and the vast expanse of the Elk Mountains towering above the Roaring Fork Valley.
The subdivision of Starwood is one of the best places in the Valley for new construction homes. Owners are granted building rights without the limitations imposed by the city of Aspen. This is a huge deal. For example, in 2018, Starwood had almost 20 new houses under construction, at an average size of 9,000 square feet. Starwood approves both new construction projects and remodels in a timely manner. 90% of remodels are approved within two weeks. As well, Starwood has its own irrigation ditch, meaning even the most creative landscaping aspirations are possible.
With this in mind, Starwood real estate is priced well into the luxury bracket, and the community makes for a great full-time residence or for a second/vacation property.
John Denver: Starwood in Aspen
It’s only natural that Starwood has its own shining star, and that star is John Denver, one of the most genre-defining country artists the U.S. has ever seen. Denver was an early mover in Aspen, having built his spectacular, 570 Johnson Drive mansion in 1971. In addition to “Starwood in Aspen,” he wrote several songs about the town, including “Rocky Mountain High.”
Unlike many celebrities, who bounce around from mansion to mansion throughout their careers, Denver lived full-time at his “rocky mountain paradise” from the late ‘60s until his death in 1997. He was a regular at joints like the Woody Creek Tavern, also a favorite watering hole for Aspen’s own Hunter S. Thompson, another local celebrity beloved by the community.
The mansion, which still exists, perfectly embodies the Starwood lifestyle, with its casual comfort and upscale sophistication. The house sold for $3.68 million after Denver’s death in 1997 and has sold several times since. It’s now valued at about $16 million. Recent remodels have added a new sheen of luxury while maintaining the rustic-yet-upscale vibe.

Things To Do in Starwood
Starwood offers incredible amenities, including private tennis courts, equestrian pastures, a post office, professional security, and winter snow-plowing, as well as cross-country skiing and hiking trails. There is 24/7 gated security at its gatehouse, which also provides various other services to the residents of the community, such as mail/package receiving and wildlife monitoring.
Aspen Skiing
Skiing brought Aspen out of the “quiet years,” from the collapse of the mining boom until the post-war 1940s. It all started with Lift One in 1946, the longest chairlift in the world at the time. Since then, Aspen has developed four world-class ski resorts and evolved into one of the world’s premier year-round resorts.
Aspen Mountain sprouts straight out of downtown Aspen and has been the locals’ hill-of-choice for decades. It’s one of the steepest ski mountains in the country—there are no green trails—and much of the terrain is covered in tight trees or ungroomed moguls. It’s a beginner’s nightmare but an expert’s paradise.
Aspen Highlands is the other expert mountain of the Aspen bunch. The highlight is the Highland Bowl, situated at 12,300 ft at the summit of Highland Peak. The bowl is a magnet for powder and the 30-minute hike is strenuous, serving as a test-piece for local fitness. The reward is some of the best lift-access powder skiing in the world.
Buttermilk is a lower elevation, sun-soaked mountain primarily for beginners and intermediates. It’s the most family-friendly mountain of the bunch.
Snowmass is a destination mountain resort with its own European-style base village. At 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, Snowmass is much larger than Aspen Mountain and Highlands combined. You can find everything from beginner trails to expert slopes, but Snowmass caters best to intermediates and those who ski for a couple of weeks every year.
Hiking & Walking Trails Around Aspen
Hiking is how Aspenites stay fit for winter. Trails surround the Roaring Fork Valley in all directions. Starwood HOA offers its own community trails, a unique amenity, with 70 acres of meadows and horse pastures. However, for those looking further afield, the Maroon Creek trailhead is home to one of the country’s most famous viewpoints of the Maroon Peaks.
Golfing In Aspen
Aspen is a golfer’s paradise, albeit only in the summer (fortunately, there’s skiing all winter to make up for that). The Aspen Golf Club is one of Colorado’s best municipal courses, located just at the bottom of the hill from Starwood. Though it’s a muni, the town maintains the greens like a private club.
Meanwhile, the Maroon Creek Club is one of the country’s most exclusive, with a buy-in of over a quarter million dollars and annual dues approaching $50K. Gold digest has ranked this Tom Fazio-designed course the 7th best in Colorado. Tee times are also available to the public on a limited basis.
Equestrian Pursuits & Cycling
Aspen has a rich history as a frontier mining and ranching center and has maintained its relationship with horses. Today, Aspen is home to many equestrian estates, with all the space in the world for those horses to stretch their legs. In Starwood, there are communal meadows for horses. Nearby Wilderness Areas, like Hunter-Frying Pan and Maroon Snowmass, offer unlimited riding potential on quiet, wilderness trails.
There are plenty of outfitters for those without their own steed, as well as a massive community of horse owners in the Valley.
Road cycling is very popular in the Roaring Fork Valley. The Rio Grande Trail, which follows the Roaring Fork River from Aspen to Glenwood Springs (42 miles), is the easiest route. Other roads are challenging mountain excursions for the fittest riders, like Independence Pass, which usually opens from Memorial Day to October, depending on snow. Starwood also plows the streets during the winter months.
Downtown Aspen
Downtown is the hub of the legendary Aspen lifestyle. Starwood offers a peaceful, quiet, and tranquil atmosphere. Still, just 15 minutes down the road you can attend concerts, go out to bars, enjoy fine dining, and even enjoy cultural offerings like the Aspen Art Museum and symposiums at the Aspen Institute. Aspen is defined by a combination of history and luxury that you simply won’t find anywhere else.
Schools & Education In Starwood
Five schools serve Starwood. The three public schools are Aspen Elementary School, grades PK-4; Aspen Middle School, grades 5-8; and Aspen High School, grades 9-12. All three of these schools are located in West Aspen between Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands, about a ten-minute drive from Starwood. It’s actually easier to get to school from Starwood than from many parts of downtown Aspen, where the roundabout out of town gets snarled with traffic each morning.
Two private schools are Aspen Country Day School and Aspen Community School, both grades K-8. Additionally, the Wildwood School in East Aspen offers programs for Pre-K children between the ages of two and a half and five.
