Woody Creek

Woody Creek, Colorado, sits about eight miles from the Aspen Central Core. Despite its population of just 290 residents and its proximity to Aspen, Woody Creek has an outsized reputation. The town is most famous for being the home of journalist Hunter S. Thompson from 1969 until his death in 2005. Today, the village is a popular pit stop for those passing by the eclectic Woody Creek Tavern.

Woody Creek, CO At A Glance

Woody Creek was founded in the 1940s when the Lee Jones family built a large log cabin near the junction of Woody Creek and the Roaring Fork River. That original cabin is now the iconic Woody Creek Tavern (established in 1980), the centerpiece of the small town. Since its inception, Woody Creek has become the home of numerous celebrities

Discover Woody Creek Real Estate

Woody Creek real estate mainly comprises large single-family homes, ranches, and sprawling estates that offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Aspen. These estates are similar to desirable neighborhoods like McLain Flats—though Woody Creek is located further from the airport. Single-family homes for sale in this area, which typically comprises all or almost all of the available listings, are situated on vast tracts of land.

It is also home to iconic properties, such as Hunter S. Thompson’s 118-acre Owl Farm, abutting the escarpment of White River National Forest. The Gonzo journalist purchased the property in 1969 for $75,000; today, you can stay in his writer’s cabin to find inspiration, available to rent on a nightly basis. It’s currently a work in progress to establish a museum.

Estates for sale are scattered about still-working farms and ranchland, with dozens of paddocks dispersed around Woody Creek’s expansive and flat valley terrain. Like its name suggests, this neighborhood is positioned on the Roaring Fork River, with many properties having river frontage. For properties on the eastern side, the more elevated homes have great views of the surrounding mountains.

Additionally, homes range from smaller, log cabin-style properties (perfect as a vacation home) to grand properties upwards of 4,000 and 5,000 square feet in size. Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms make these homes excellent for both renting and for families. Luxury homes for sale encompass a wider range of design styles, but most of the homes on the Woody Creek market have been inspired by the traditional cabins of the area. Woody Creek properties have been selling at almost half the rate of comparable Red Mountain properties, though these are sizable estates that generally sell at more than $5 million.

Things To Do In Woody Creek

Woody Creek is generally considered a semi-rural escape, appealing particularly to those who want to enjoy the outdoors. This area is removed from Aspen and offers unparalleled privacy. Most roads only see local traffic.

For shopping and dining, there are a few local spots, however Aspen is less than a 20-minute drive away. The Woody Creek Tavern, located in the center of Woody Creek, has been serving pub fare and stiff drinks since 1980. The walls are plastered with memorabilia from 50 years of Aspen history. The menu is mainly pub fare, though you can get fancy with items like the lobster roll, as well as bottles of Dom Perignon champagne. And while Aspen offers luxury shopping, Basalt is the closest town to Aspen that has zoning for shopping centers with things you need on a day-to-day basis. Having a base further down the valley makes it much easier to make the trip here.

Skiing is another popular pastime of Woody Creek residents. This neighborhood is exceptionally close to Snowmass Village, one of the best ski resorts out of the Aspen four, especially for families. By the numbers, Woody Creek is 20 minutes from Aspen Mountain, 15 minutes to Aspen Highlands, and 10 minutes to Buttermilk and Snowmass.

The Rio Grande Trail is an Aspen treasure. The trail works its way along the Roaring Fork for nearly 43 miles, from the Aspen downtown to Glenwood Springs. Woody Creek is also located along the Roaring Fork River and is classified as Wild Trout Waters. Grab your fly rod and get after those rainbows!
