East Aspen

East Aspen is one of the closest suburbs to the Aspen Central Core. Generally speaking, there is a vibe shift east of City Market, where the tourists thin out and the noise dies down. However, East Aspen technically begins after crossing the Roaring Fork River. Once you cross the bridge, Aspen’s grid layout and Victorian homes morph into windy roads that gently wind their way up the foot of the mountains. East Cooper Avenue morphs into Highway 82 and continues to Independence Pass, the highest paved road in America at over 12,000 feet.

East Aspen: An Overview

Located on Aspen’s east side, this neighborhood is primarily residential and less walkable than the Central Core district. Despite this, however, the downtown area is only about two to five minutes away by car and public transportation is also available. If choosing to walk, the Central Core is only about ten to thirty minutes, depending on location.

East Aspen properties range from condos to single-family homes and large estates. Condos are located south of East Cooper Avenue, while single-family properties dot the foothills to the north and east. Price ranges on a property by property basis, but generally East Aspen is considered an affluent neighborhood, with prices beginning in the low millions.

Homes for sale in East Aspen are desirable particularly for their views, as many of the properties are found on higher elevation with scenic, private views. New construction homes take up a good portion of the homes on East Aspen’s real estate market, as many buyers seek custom-built estates. This also allows for freedom in regards to architectural style, so this district has a lot of unique properties that really adds value to the neighborhood. From traditional log cabins to contemporary designs, East Aspen has a lot of luxurious homes to offer prospective buyers.

As an alternative to a single-family home, East Aspen’s condos for sale are equally luxurious. These properties offer that same mixture of architectural styles, with an emphasis on the cozy, cabin-lie atmosphere—seen often in interior features. Fireplaces, for example, are frequently found in condo units, while decks and balconies allow residents to sit outside and enjoy the mountain views.

East Aspen has few businesses, hotels, and large condo complexes. There are only a handful of Short-Term Rentals (STRs) here, unlike Aspen’s Central Core. East Aspen is one of the best neighborhoods for families due to the close proximity to area parks, the peace and tranquil atmosphere, and the relative distance to the downtown and schools.

Things To Do In East Aspen

East Aspen offers a wealth of activities and amenities, both within the community and just outside of it. This neighborhood’s parks are among the best in Pitkin County, and there are ample opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the area. The Rio Grande Trail, for example, begins at Herron Park and continues 42 miles to Glenwood Springs. A five-minute drive east reaches the North Star Nature Reserve. Additionally, neighborhood parks include Freddie Fisher Park and Snyder Park, while the Aspen Grove Cemetery is a relaxing place to take the dog for a walk.

This neighborhood is also located near Independence Pass, which allows for quick, easy access to the highest paved road in America. Not only is the pass a world-famous destination for motorists—especially motorcyclists—it’s also a jumping-off point for hiking, camping, and ski touring. When the pass closes each winter, it becomes a gateway for ski touring for those looking to escape the crowds and groomed runs at the resorts, and also links to various trails and campgrounds.

When it comes to dining out, PARC Aspen is just three blocks from the Roaring Fork River, offering classic, French-inspired fine dining options like fois gras, tenderloin, and coq au vin. There is also a lifetime of wines to choose from. For those doing their own grocery shopping, East Aspen is also close to City Market, a massive advantage in the grand scheme of Aspen life.

The Aspen shopping experience is closer to that of Paris or New York. It is home to a variety of luxury designer and jewelry brands, such as Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Van Cleef & Arpels, and more.

than what you’d expect from a small city of 7,000 residents in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. You’ll find luxury designer brands like Gucci, Prada, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, with Galena St. serving as the hub for luxury.

Skiing in East Aspen

East Aspen’s proximity to the Central Core makes it one of the closest areas in Aspen to the Silver Queen Gondola and Aspen Mountain ski area. Ajax is possibly the most complex, but for beginners and intermediates, Buttermilk and Snowmass have broad, open slopes with masterful groomers who lay down perfect corduroy day after day. They also receive far more sunshine than Ajax, especially mid-winter.

These days, backcountry skiing is all the rage, and Independence Pass is legendary for spring turns. Each year, the Pass opens around Memorial Day, and if it’s been a fruitful winter, there are three to four weeks of superb spring skiing. And for when you need to pick up some ski gear, Gorsuch in the downtown area defines luxury Colorado skiing.

Schools & Education in East Aspen

Five schools serve East Aspen. The three public schools are Aspen Elementary School, grades PK-4; Aspen Middle School, grades 5-8; and Aspen High School, grades 9-12. Two private schools are Aspen Country Day School and Aspen Community School, both grades K-8. The Wildwood School offers programs for Pre-K children between the ages of two and a half and five.
